The Problem Statement:

"Users feel overwhelmed by too many food choices and take too long to place an order."

From initial research and informal conversations with students and young professionals, I learned:

  • Many users spend 10+ minutes just deciding what to eat.

  • Repeat ordering is often a manual, frustrating process.

  • Dine-out options are buried or non-existent in food delivery apps.

💬 These insights sparked the idea for Tumzey — an app that simplifies food decisions, speeds up ordering, and blends delivery with dine-out discovery.

Tone & Feel

Energetic, welcoming, and easy to navigate

Onboarding & Smart Setup

Sets the tone by showing users the value upfront while customizing their experience.

  • 3-screen onboarding walkthrough: Shows app value quickly with visual illustrations and a skip option.

  • Preference selection: Users select cuisine types and dining modes (delivery/dine-in) to personalize future suggestions.

  • Quick location setup: GPS auto-detect or manual pinning makes the first order frictionless.

🧠 Why it matters: Users instantly feel the app understands their needs. It sets the tone for a tailored experience and minimizes setup fatigue.

Smart Discovery & Predictive Search

Designed to reduce choice overload and guide users to the right decision quickly.

  • Smart categories: Trending food, top-rated restaurants, curated combos

  • Predictive search: Suggestions based on preferences, past orders, and time of day

  • Live deal banners: Offers tailored to user behavior

🧠 Why it matters: Helps users discover food faster without mindless scrolling, reducing decision time dramatically.

Customized Item Flow + Smart Reordering

Seamlessly handles both first-time orders and frequent reorders.

  • Modular item add-ons: Customize quantity, toppings, spice levels, etc.

  • “Last ordered” shortcut: Smart reminders of frequently ordered items

  • “Repeat your last order” CTA: Prominently placed for quick checkout

🧠 Why it matters: Familiarity builds trust. Users can act fast, especially when they’re hungry or in a rush.

Real-Time Order Tracking & Notifications

Keeps users informed and calm post-purchase—no more cold food surprises.

  • Live map view with driver ETA and route

  • Status updates (Order Accepted → In Kitchen → Picked Up → Arriving)

  • Smart push alerts to reduce app anxiety

🧠 Why it matters: Builds trust by keeping users in the loop, reducing frustration and uncertainty.

Saved Favorites & Deals

Makes repeat behavior frictionless while delivering delight via personalization.

  • Favorite dishes & places: One-tap reorder from saved items

  • Personalized deals: Based on cuisine, order frequency, and cart behavior

  • Streak rewards: Small gamification for regular users

🧠 Why it matters: Loyalty starts with making the user feel seen. These micro-moments of personalization go a long way.

Dining Out Flow with Table Booking

Brings dine-in and delivery under one roof—a rare but delightful combination.

  • Dine-in browsing: Search restaurants that offer table reservations

  • Live slot booking: See real-time availability and book with one tap

  • Confirmation screen: Includes restaurant contact, map, and check-in instructions

🧠 Why it matters: Adds convenience and value for users who want more than just delivery, without switching apps.

What I Learned

  1. Small features like “Repeat Order” make a big difference in saving time and effort.

  2. A clear layout and step-by-step flow help users feel less confused and more confident.

  3. Testing with real people, even for a concept, gave honest feedback I couldn’t get otherwise.

  4. Solving real problems starts by listening to what users struggle with daily.

Final Thoughts

“A good food app doesn’t just deliver food. It delivers clarity, ease, and delight.”

Tumzey was more than a design exercise—it was an empathetic response to a daily problem. From late-night cravings to weekend outings, Tumzey proves that food ordering doesn’t have to be overwhelming, slow, or disconnected. With a deeply considered UX, it wraps discovery, decision-making, and delivery into a single intuitive journey
