What We Noticed in the Market
Over time, one pattern became impossible to ignore:
Candidates apply to dozens, sometimes hundreds of jobs
They hear back from only a handful
Silence has quietly become the default outcome of applying
This isn’t limited to freshers, startups, or any single geography. It happens across roles, experience levels, and platforms. LinkedIn, Naukri, Indeed, company career pages — the experience is largely the same.
Ghosting has become so normalized that candidates now expect it.
That normalization was the first red flag.
The Real Problem (Not the Obvious One)
At first glance, it looks like a communication problem. In reality, it’s an incentive and system design problem.
Today:
There is no real consequence for not responding to candidates
Applicant Tracking Systems optimize for filtering, not closure
Recruiters are measured on hiring speed, not candidate experience
When there is no cost to silence, silence wins.
As a result, candidates respond by applying everywhere. Recruiters respond by filtering harder. The gap widens — and trust erodes on both sides.
Ghosting is not a people failure. It’s a product failure.
What We Are Trying to Solve
We are not trying to:
Stop people from applying
Force recruiters to write hundreds of emails
Add emotional or operational burden
We are trying to solve one thing:
Not feedback. Not justification. Just closure.
How the Problem Manifests Today
Both sides behave logically — inside a broken system.
Our Core Hypothesis
If application closure becomes a system requirement instead of a human courtesy, ghosting can be reduced without increasing manual effort.
The system should do the uncomfortable but necessary work. Humans should only make decisions.
The Shift We Introduced
Instead of designing another tracking layer, we redesigned the end state.
Applications can no longer exist in a permanent limbo.
Every application must eventually transition into a defined outcome:
Under Review
Shortlisted
Rejected
Hired
If a recruiter does nothing, the system still moves the application forward responsibly.
What This Changes
For Candidates
Silence is replaced with certainty
Rejection becomes informative, not personal
Status is visible in one place
Emotional fatigue is reduced through grouped notifications
Instead of 100 unanswered applications, candidates see 100 resolved outcomes.
Handling Sensitive Edge Cases Thoughtfully
Reapplying Candidates & Bias
Showing previous rejections upfront can create unconscious bias.
So we intentionally:
Hide application history by default
Reveal it only inside detailed candidate view
Focus first on what has changed since last application
History provides context, not judgment.
High-Volume Rejections & Candidate Morale
If a candidate applies to many jobs, receiving hundreds of rejection emails can be demotivating.
Our approach:
Batch notifications
Dashboard-first updates
Email used only for meaningful transitions
The goal is emotional clarity, not inbox overload.
What Exists Today — and Why It’s Not Enough
Most platforms already offer:
Job posting
Apply buttons
Basic status tracking
What they don’t enforce:
Outcome accountability
Time-bound application states
Platform-level responsibility for closure
Tracking without enforcement does not solve ghosting.
Research & Exploration
To validate this direction, we:
Studied ATS workflows and recruiter behavior
Analyzed candidate drop-off and frustration points
Reviewed existing hiring platforms and their limitations
Mapped incentive gaps across both user types
Methods & Tools:
Experience mapping
Competitive teardowns
Scenario-based design
Rapid prototyping on Vercel
Limitations (Current)
This product does not magically fix hiring.
Current constraints include:
Limited feedback depth
No enterprise ATS integrations yet
Cultural adoption still required
This phase focuses on correctness and behavior change, not scale.
Why This Matters
Hiring is one of the most emotionally expensive systems people interact with.
When silence becomes the norm, platforms quietly fail the people they’re built for.
This project challenges that norm by making closure a default behavior, not an exception.
Open for Feedback
This work is ongoing.
If you’re a recruiter, candidate, or hiring manager, your feedback can directly shape the next iteration. Edge cases, objections, and real-world constraints are especially welcome.
Final Thought
Ghosting persists not because people are careless — but because systems allow them to be. By redesigning responsibility into the platform itself, we can make hiring more humane without slowing it down.
